Mari-Cha IV, Genuine Risk and Whirlaway Moor at Driscoll This Summer

Driscoll hosts the world's fastest sailing yacht, Mari-Cha IV.SAN DIEGO, CA – July 28, 2004 – The docks have heated up at Driscoll Boat Works this summer as the “world’s fastest sailing yacht,” Mari-Cha IV, has sailed into the Shelter Island facility for housing and disassembly. Also at Driscoll’s this summer was the maxi-racer Genuine Risk and the yacht Whirlaway, stopping in for training and refinishing purposes before sailing off to their next ocean adventures.

One hundred forty feet of all carbon-fiber, the Mari-Cha IV was created to become the fastest racing monohull ever. This was proven at the recent West Marine Pacific Cup race, where it shattered the record by a full day for the fastest sailing time from San Francisco to Hawaii. The yacht also made history in October for setting the transatlantic speed record from New York to the United Kingdom. Now, Driscoll’s crew is unstepping the mast and disassembling the boat in preparation for its next journey to Europe.Genuine Risk sails outside of the San Diego Bay during its visit to Driscoll Boat Works

In June, Genuine Risk, the newest and biggest CBTF (Canting Ballast – Twin Foil) boat, made its first appearance in San Diego. Driscoll assisted in the assembly of the boat and served as the “base training camp” as she prepared for her debut this month at the Port Hueron-Mac and the Chicago-Mac. At 90 feet, this $6 million race boat is capable of both off-shore and buoy racing. Designed by Dubois Naval Architects in the United Kingdom and built by McCounaghy Boats in Sydney, Australia, Genuine Risk is a technologically advanced design with a canting keel and a fore and aft rudder.

Whirlaway, a 140 foot megayacht, is under full sail.Back for the second time, the 140 foot yacht Whirlaway underwent routine maintenance during a 70-day stay at Driscoll’s. With new carpentry, electrical, mechanical work, varnish and paint, the $40 million sailing yacht then headed off to Alaska.
