Driscoll Boat Works Holds
Pumpkin Toss 2008
SAN
DIEGO, CA – On Friday October 31, 2008 Driscoll Boat Works held its fourth
annual Pumpkin Toss. The yearly celebration is one of the many events hosted
by Driscoll to bring together yacht crews, local businesses and members of
the small San Diego community of Shelter Island.
Over a hundred people were present on a gorgeous October day at the Driscoll
Boat Yard. This year, the company teamed up with Rocket Research and held
activities that included the original Pumpkin Toss, Dunk a Driscoll dunk
tank, and a delicious lunch provided by Chick-Fil-A. As participants lined
up at the Driscoll scissor lift for their
chance
to throw a pumpkin into a trashcan from thirty feet into the air, others
took turns soaking their fellow colleagues and friends in the dunk tank.
This year the top three competitors of the Pumpkin Toss were Armando Tablas
(Driscoll Topside Painter), Dar Merkes (Driscoll Electrician) and Daniel
Watts (crew from S/Y Jagare). They each won much appreciated gas cards and
proceeds from the Driscoll Dunk went to the San Diego Rescue Mission
charity.
It was very surreal for some onlookers to see a large part of the yard
covered with smashed pumpkins right with two superyachts M/Y Paraffin and
M/Y Slo Jo. Perhaps the most intrigued was the crew of S/Y Symmetry, whose
150’ mast was laid out
behind
the scissor lift while waiting to be re-stepped after being painted.
The Pumpkin Toss, which has gained much popularity throughout the Shelter
Island and surrounding Point Loma community was first created as a way to
show appreciation for the over 60 employees of the company. As the years
passed and the word spread, the Toss has expanded to other members of the
yachting community in San Diego as well crews of the impressive superyachts
docked at the Driscoll Boat Yard. With its central location, the Boat Yard
event attracts visitors from North San Diego County all the way down to the
South Bay.
Driscoll Boat Works is a third generation family owned and run company in
San Diego. They are a full service yacht repair facility on beautiful
Shelter Island. Driscoll has deep water facilities for vessels up to 65
meters in length and haulout capacity for vessels up to 150 tons. For more
